Information.

Details are subject to change.

We welcome your interest in the sport of archery, and hope that you will enjoy your session and continue on to take up a full beginners course and perhaps become a member of a GNAS affiliated club. Should you wish to do so, we have a qualified archery coach to guide you through the beginners course and beyond. We can then teach you different styles and codes of archery, using a wide variety of bow types, and both target and field disciplines. We do not however, teach or allow crossbow, or bowhunting styles.

Weather. In case of rain we can use a sports hall for training, but there will be an additional charge payable in advance for this at £35 per hour (subject to availability and change). Once booked this cannot be refunded as the owners will be unlikely to re-let for the slot. The hall booking will have to be made in advance as it will be almost impossible to get a booking at short notice.

Ages. We can teach a whole range of people from the age of seven years and above (CRB certificates held), but in keeping with current codes of practice, we expect parents or guardians to remain with their children (under sixteen years of age) until the lesson ends.

Clothing. First of all, and this really IS important, please wear fairly tight fitting clothing on the upper body. This is to ensure that the string when released will not be impeded by loose folds of jumpers or coats etc. This is usually less of a problem in Summer months as articles of clothing such as T-shirts are more likely to be worn. Footwear should consist of sturdy boots or other waterproof shoes/trainers with a good tread, especially if the field is muddy. In Summer months however, open-toed footwear should NOT be worn due to the possibility of injury.

We will teach you the basics of archery, but we can train you to much higher levels if you wish. In the interests of safety, we will expect you to comply with all instructions given without hesitation. It may not be immediately obvious to you that a situation has arisen which would compromise the safety of either an intruder who may have strayed into a dangerous area, or that some action has placed yourself or someone else in the class in a possibly harmful position. For example, you will be told about the command "FAST" meaning hold-fast, (it does NOT mean shoot faster) and is to be complied with without question IMMEDIATELY. It means that if you are ready to shoot with an arrow on the bow, the bow must be lowered and the arrow removed and replaced in the quiver, until the all-clear is given.

Important footnote

There has recently been a resurgence of interest in archery owing to the film "Lord of the Rings" being released and featuring a character called "Legolas", who is an archer. The stunts performed by "Legolas" it should be made clear, are just that, - STUNTS, and should NOT be taken as representative of archery in general. Certain stunts depicted in that film, such as attaching two arrows to the bow, will NOT be part of the course. The bow used by "Legolas" is a special effect, and will NOT be found on general sale.
